Burak or the red noise (world premiere)

LUTZ Hagen

Violence has many faces and characterises in different ways the lives of far too many (young) people. Take Burak, for example. He is a boy from Hagen. A son and brother. A German and a Kurd. Victim and perpetrator. Aggressor and peacemaker. After Burak had to experience domestic violence at a young age, the issue continues to haunt him as an adolescent. In response to physical and psychological violence caused by racist discrimination from teachers and classmates, Burak himself becomes a perpetrator. When he is brutally beaten up by the Grey Wolves after a demonstration and only the intervention of a policewoman can prevent a tragedy, he manages to escape the spiral of violence.

Besides Burak, other young people also shared their stories with us. Together with dance students from the Folkwang University of the Arts, drama students and members of the LUTZ ensemble, the LUTZ team and WestDeutsche Tanztheater are developing a movement theatre performance based on true stories that aim to draw attention, move people and show ways out.

Excerpt from the jury's statement:

“Dance, theatre, comics and video installations merge into a complete artwork that captivates the audience and shows possibilities for self-reflection."

The theatre play "Burak or The Red Noise" is a moving examination of the facets of violence in the lives of young people. Based on true stories, it takes us into a world in which violence is omnipresent – in domestic conflicts, racial discrimination or personal disputes. Dance, theatre, comics and video installations merge to create a complete artwork that captivates the audience and offers opportunities for self-reflection. The performance shows how violence shapes not only victims, but also perpetrators, and encourages prevention. "Burak or The Red Noise" offers a variety of perspectives - from utopia to shocking scenes - and asks questions about masculinity and finding one's identity. The production encourages people to deal with this difficult topic and creates space for dialogue and reflection in the work against violence.

LUTZ was founded in 2000 as a section for young audiences at Hagen City Theatre with its own venue. Anja Schöne took over as artistic director in 2017. Each season, she and a team of actors, musicians, dancers and other guest artists develop 4-6 new productions for people of all generations from the age of 2. The focus is on devised productions and modern adaptations of classical material, fairy tales and dramas. The LUTZ THEATERZENTRALE offers participatory projects in the city districts and in the theatre and is committed to the interests of young people in the city. In its artistic and conceptual orientation, LUTZ is interdisciplinary, intergenerational, anti-hierarchical, integrative, co-operative and anti-illusionist.

Indication:
The performance deals with phenomena of physical and psychological violence as well as racist, classist and sexist discrimination.
