Money! (world premiere)

Consol Theater, Gelsenkirchen

a theatrical skill competition

This annoying, cursed money. You can't eat it, you have to have it anyway, you shouldn't talk about it and it supposedly doesn't stink. We deal with it every day and know so little about it: Where does it come from, who determines its value, who benefits from it, who makes the rules and why do we stick to them?

Based on joint research with pupils and a team of scientists, we have developed a piece that aims to open up possibilities and the desire to talk openly and freely about the topic. The three performers explore the mechanisms and dodges of the money economy and touch on almost all aspects of money in a fast-paced, all-round performance - from the ECB to social business, from Wirecard to questions of career choice.

Shifting formally between lecture performance and dazzling revue, they balance between temptation and greed, between power and empowerment.

Excerpt from the jury's statement:Selection committee statement excerpt:
“The director constantly finds new, surprising thematic approaches, resulting in one original scene after the next and and keeping always the audience in mind; all this is supported by texts that are not ingratiatingly simple, but challenging in the best sense of the word."

Billed as a theatrical skills competition, the production "GELD" is a humorous, enlightening, clever and artistic exploration of the eponymous topic in all its complexity. At the beginning, the three performers puzzle over whether the audience won't be bored by a theatre piece on the subject of money, which is quickly answered in the negative. The ensemble radiates joy and energy right from the start, involves the audience in the play, gives each other space and impresses with a furious mix of singing, dancing and acting. The director constantly finds new, surprising thematic approaches, resulting in one original scene after the next and keeping always the audience in mind; all supported by texts that are not ingratiatingly simple, but challenging in the best sense of the word.
The production "GELD" wants people to think and critically scrutinise. For example, the connection between 'financial starting conditions' and 'opportunities in people's lives' is negotiated in rhetorical questions. It is also about economic cycles and financial systems. An equally questioning and critical examination of capitalism and its influence on political systems, which seemingly undermines societies without any alternative, is not left out.
Through the power of outstanding theatre, the audience experiences how the topic determines and influences our communal life, our role models, but also the most intimate and private moments.

The Consol Theater is part of the "kultur.gebiet CONSOL" on a former colliery site in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck. Opened in 2001, the theatre has developed into a lively venue with great responsibility for cultural education and social interaction between people of different ages and backgrounds. The theatre's repertoire focuses on new plays for children and young people.
