I can't stop
(world premiere)

by Janne Gregor
a production by TANZKOMPLIZEN with tanzhaus NRW

A participatory piece with Krump dancers

In "Ich kann's nicht lassen", participation becomes a compositional principle. The audience determines how the piece unfolds. Children and adults stand on stage with four dancers and discover the Krump dance style together. They engage in a choreographic game that Janne Gregor developed in dialogue with the Krump professionals and several Berlin school classes. Krump originated as an Afro-diasporic dance culture on the streets of LA and is based on a rebellion against social inequality and discrimination. The Krump community creates solidarity, it's about showing yourself and supporting each other.

Excerpt from the jury's statement:

“In the production "Ich kanns nicht lassen", participation is not only treated as a central theme, but is actually implemented, and not just for young audiences. You can join in an outstanding, holistic art experience."

“In the production "Ich kanns nicht lassen", participation is not only treated as a central theme, but is actually implemented, and not just for young audiences. You can join in an outstanding, holistic art experience. The audience-performer relationship is cancelled from the beginning. The four dancers gently guide the group and charmingly avoid any animation traps. Instead, they playfully ensure that everyone gets moving. All audience members are familiarised with different movement sequences on the "stage" and are given the opportunity to collect their own movement material and combine it freely at the end. Together with the dancers, the participants can experience the joy of movement during the 40 minutes of the performance. Everyone also learns that everyone can dance and that a lot of frustration can be reduced in the process. The four dance professionals focus on the "Krump" dance style, which originated in an African-American community in Los Angeles."
