Building on the idea that images influence opinions, the LUTZ team has developed a participatory format that blends elements of an exhibition, a reading and a theatre performance. Excerpts will be read from Liz Kessler’s award-winning young adult novel *When the World Belonged to Us*, which tells the story of a friendship between three friends that is abruptly torn apart by Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany. In between, the audience is invited to discover the stories of people from our city’s present and past, and to reflect on which moments can move and empower us, and how images influence our memories and opinions.
Since LUTZ was founded as Hagen’s third theatre company in 2000, 4–6 new productions have been staged each season at its own venue. The spectrum ranges from original plays and participatory productions in urban spaces to classic literary texts. In its artistic and conceptual approach, LUTZ is interdisciplinary, intergenerational, anti-hierarchical, inclusive, collaborative and anti-illusionist.
