“Big Brother is watching you” – George Orwell wrote this world-famous phrase in his 1948 book *1984*. It has since become synonymous with any form of surveillance state. Many of the situations Orwell described in 1948 as a frightening vision of the future seem disturbingly familiar to us in 2025. “1984” is far more than a dystopia. It also tells the love story of Winston Smith and Julia, a relationship that is forbidden in Big Brother’s surveillance state. How can love survive in times when everyone mistrusts everyone else? The aesthetic, reminiscent of the 1980s, reinforces the unsettling glimpse back into the future.
